World’s Oldest Flamingo Dies

World’s oldest flamingo, also known as “Greater” died in the Adelaide zoo in Australia. He was aged eighty three and is survived by a long term friend, a Chilean flamingo. The sex as well as the origin of the flamingo is unknown and he was brought to the zoo in 1933. Greater was almost blind and experienced complications related to old age due to which he was put to sleep on Thursday.

“Greater is best known for being the world’s oldest flamingo and the last greater flamingo to have resided in Australia,” Zoos South Australia chief executive Elaine Bensted said. “There was no additional medical treatment that would have improved Greater’s quality of life”, the zoo staff said. While flamingos can live for decades in captivity, they have only a lifespan of about 25 years in the wild due to predators and lack of medical attention. The Chilean flamingo that is in his 60s is now Australia’s only remaining flamingo and will be monitored to see his reactions to the death.
