Islamophobia on ‘Air’

Tahera_L

Tahera Ahmed, a Muslim Chaplain at Chicago’s Northwestern University, has alleged that she was denied an unopened can of Diet Coke on the airplane that led to pledges to boycott the airline. On her facebook page, Tahera wrote that a flight attendant has discriminated against her after she asked for an unopened of soda for hygienic reasons and was told that she would not be served an unopened can for security reasons (so that she might use it as a weapon).

When the man next to her got an unopened beer can from the in-flight service, Tahera said she was told something even more inflammatory. She said her fellow passengers were of no help. Though she did not respond to the questions for comment, Muslim activists took to social media to call the alleged incident an act of bigotry, while other social media users said they would boycott United Airlines based on what they interpreted as open discrimination.
