Reviving the Islamic Spirit convention
The Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS 2013) Convention was held in Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Canada. Prominent Muslim thinkers, theologians and intellectuals including Abdallah Bin Bayyah, Habib Ali al-Jaferi, Amr Khaled ,Tariq Ramadan, Hossein Nasr, Denise Spellberg, John Esposito, Hamza Yusuf , and Zahir Mahmood participated. Mesut Kurtis, a renowned Macedonian musician of Turkish descent, performed a concert during the convention.
The theme of the convention this year was “Changing Our Condition”. RIS spokeswoman Farhia Ahmed said that the message intended to convey is that “Muslims need to renovate themselves in accordance with the changing conditions of the world.” RIS was first held in 2003 as a response to the September 11 attacks and annually features speeches from scholars from different parts of the world.
