The Royal Opera House open every morning

Van Gogh

A new Vincent Van Gogh painting has been discovered after two years of research to confirm its authenticity. The work, Sunset at Montmajour (1888), was done during the artist’s time in the Southern French town of Arles, the same period during which he painted his Sunflowers, The Yellow House and The Bedroom.

The priceless piece will be on display from 24 September to 12 January in the current Van Gogh at Work Exhibition, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam said in a news release.

Sunset at Montmajour, which was a part of collection of Van Gogh’s Brother Theo, was sold in 1901. The piece is now owned by private collectors who approached the museum to verify the genuineness of the painting.

Louis van Tilborgh, a senior researcher at the Van Gogh Museum, told at a news briefing streamed live by the Dutch Internet site www.at5.nl that after two years of thorough investigation, it was found that the style, painting materials and context were matching to other Van Gogh works completed in the summer of 1888. The pigments used are similar to those that Van Gogh used during his time including the discolorations that are a feature of his work, he said.
