Tremors Hit Chilean Coast

chileA powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitude on Richter scale, struck the northern coast of Chile late on Wednesday just twenty four hours after an 8.2 magnitude tremor hit the coast on Tuesday night killing six people, triggering a tsunami and causing vast destruction.

The 7.6 quake was recorded at 23:43 local time (0243 Thursday GMT) 19 km south of the city of Iquique, around 1,850 kilometres north of Santiago, the US Geological Survey said. A tsunami alert in Chile and Peru was issued, but was later cancelled after waves of 2.4ft (0.7 meters) hit coastal areas. Chilean President Michele Bachelet was evacuated from her hotel close to the shore in Arica where she was visiting the quake-struck areas. There are no reports of damage from the latest quake.

In Tuesday’s quake, more than 2500 homes were destroyed, telephone and power lines were down and more than 10,000 people were evacuated.
