In a conversation on Monday between the British Foreign Secretary William Hague and his Iranian counterpart Muhammad Javad Sheriff, the developments in Iraq came to fore, New York Times reported the office of British Prime Minister David Cameron as saying. They shared concern about the advancement of the militants in Iraq and willingness for military cooperation.

On Tuesday, the Britain announced that “the circumstances are right” to reopen the British Embassy in Tehran and that it would establish a small presence there as soon as it is practical.

Full diplomatic ties were suspended in 2011 after attacks on Britain’s diplomatic compound in Tehran, but relations have been improving ever since a change in political leadership in Iran last year and progress in international talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
